Over the years the building which has now become our Bulbshop has had a variety of uses but has always been at the centre of activity on our small holding. Memories include its use as a stable with milking cows lined up in their stalls, of collecting eggs from the hay mangers where the chickens made their nests, and on rainy days playing on the rope swing that was suspended from a central beam and climbing the ladder to the hay loft to watch the swallow chicks in their nest.
When we took over the lease of the farm we installed a walk-in cold store ,vital at the time for cooling our Paper White and Soleil d’or blooms prior to packing them for transport to the wholesale market in Covent Garden . Nowadays the store houses our postal equipment which is part of the process of sending our flowers directly to our customers’ homes.
Whatever its uses the building on our farm that now houses The Bulbshop has altered continuously over time to accommodate the inevitable changes involved in adapting to the demands of life on a family-based Scillonian farm.
As The Bulbshop has developed its identity and become a “fixture” on St. Agnes we have widened its scope and the range of goods that we sell and now offer our customers Scillonian products like Mike and Christine Hicks’ soaps, hand-made on St. Agnes using floral oils distilled by them from locally grown crops. Dainty, hand crafted silver jewellery in the form of shells and pebbles made by Fay Page, of St. Martins. John Bourdeaux well known pottery from his studio on St.Marys. Emma Clarkson’s clever and innovative recycled beach plastic jewellery and lovely earthy hand-thrown pots by Caroline Gillett of St. Martins “Gone to Pot” studio.
We are also proud to stock lots of items of fairly traded crafts, fabrics and jewellery from all around The World which complete what we hope is a lively, interesting and affordable selection for our customers, both local and visiting The Island. It’s a real pleasure to both of us to spend time in The Bulbshop meeting and chatting to people who drop in and we do look forward to seeing familiar faces, even if we sometimes have a problem putting a name to them. (We blame this on the ageing process!).
